RJ JOINS THE AIR FORCE

Faith/La Fe member RJ Herrera will be joining the Air Force on May 4th this year.  He will be starting his journey at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas; and is looking forward to his job training  as a Munitions Systems Specialist.  Caroline and Bunni Rowlett, and his Godparents Kathie and Fred Johnson, are very proud of his accomplishments. He has been working two jobs, working out to get strong and slim for the requirements for enlistment.  We can all see the results! Join us in praying that God will guide and protect him in this new adventure.

THRIVENT VOLUNTEERS ACTIVE DESPITE COVID RESTRICTIONS

Submitted by Fred Cowley

Faith Thrivent volunteers are scoring touchdowns against the defenses posed by the Covid Pandemic. To date, we have five community service projects approved and two completed. Lutheran Social Ministry places homeless individuals and families in permanent housing in its IHELP program.

Using a $250 Action Team grant, six of our volunteers  aided the cause by shopping for and delivering 15 large two-sheet sets and pillow cases to LSMS. Jeff Havir, Dick and Laura Kohring, Caroline Rowlett, and Brenda Lund did the shopping and Fred Cowley        contributed planning and moral support. Jeff received warm words of appreciation when he dropped off the sheets.

On a recent Saturday, Brenda Lund’s grandson Gus Turner and a core group of his fellow Boy Scouts along with other Thrivent volunteers did some major rehab work on Faith’s vegetable garden. They reinforced the borders of the raised garden beds, created level walkways between the garden structures, and “re-mortared” the failing wall adjacent to the beds attached to the garden shed. Thrivent funds helped pay for tree bark, mortar powder, brackets, lumber, and wood screws. The  efforts should pave the way to a healthy growing season.

More Thrivent Projects:

Already funded and soon to be performed projects include: buying and delivering sets of children’s books which will benefit families supported by the Creighton Elementary School District Family Resource Center (Sheep in a Jeep, Grumpy Monkey, and If Animals Kissed Goodnight among the enticing titles); Thrivent volunteers will organize, fund, and carry out a Thank You Note effort for donations received by MOSAIC which because of Covid is substituting its annual fund raising luncheon with a virtual Zoom “luncheon”; and in April, Thrivent volunteers will purchase and deliver flowering, summer- hardy plants  to enhance the beauty of the Hospice of the Valley’s Gardiner facility and also buy picture boards and essential oils for aromatherapy as part of the Hospice’s Dementia Care Wish List.
