Diakonia - What is it?

You may have seen the article about Brenda Lund’s graduation from Diakonia, but what the heck is that?

The word diakonia is a Greek word which means “service,” “ministry,” “relief,” or “support,” and this program was created specifically with those ideas in mind. This intensive-two year program meets once a week for three hours, with regularly scheduled breaks from classes for summer and holidays. For individuals interested in leading or more fully participating in the life of the church, the Diakonia program equips lay leaders with foundational knowledge of the Bible, Lutheran doctrine, and church history. This intensive, two-year program also provides students the opportunity to learn and practice skills necessary for communicating the gospel, visitation, ethical decision making, and more.

For more information, check out diakoniaaz.org, or contact a Diakonia student or graduate within your congregation. Did you know that Gail Turner, Vicar Veronica Alvarez, and Carly Chamberlain have also participated in the program? If you have any questions, or are interested in stretching your own faith through this education, please reach out to one of the four of us!
