Advent 2 Soup Supper Recap
You’re really going to regret not making it to campus last night for our second midweek prayer service of Advent. Mostly because there was this cornbread that was out of this world delicious. It was more like a cake than it was cornbread. And I’ll tell you what, I walked through that kitchen at 4pm yesterday and the soups on the stove by Dolores Rehms, Diane Havir, and Gail Turner smelled absolutely heavenly.
Solveig Muus from Lutheran Advocacy Ministry of Arizona (LAMA) joined us last night and gave a riveting presentation! Her presentation revolved primarily around how members of Faith can communicate the advocacy needs of our community to our local legislators. There are two ways that she presented this to us.
The Request to Speak (RTS) System: This is a system that is administered by the Arizona Legislative Information Service. When you sign up through LAMA, they will create an account for you within the system. You can then log into that account and view/review the items that are in the legislature at the time. As a user of this system, you can “vote” for or against these measures. The system does not record actual votes, but rather shows your local legislator how his or her constituents are feeling on the matter, and helps to inform his or her decision on how to vote on the matter. If you would like to get signed up for this, please contact me in the church office. (602-265-3394 or info@faithalive.com). FYI, I signed up last night, as did many other of the attendees, so if you’d like to learn more about the system before you commit, I’ll be sure to share another article about it in the near future.
Lutheran Advocacy Day at the Legislature: Lutherans from across the state will gather at the Arizona Capitol Rose Garden for a day of advocacy on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 from 8:30 am - 10:30 am to learn, to witness, and voice our common needs in the public square, activating our faith in love. LAMA will be providing us with postcards to send to our local legislators, inviting them to join us on Feb 1, 2022 at the Capitol. It’ll be so fun!
Last night’s presentation really sparked the fire for Social Justice that Faith Lutheran Church has always had burning in its belly. If you are ready to call your local legislator today, enter your home address here to find your district, then click here to find out which legislator represents your district!
Check out the Bulletin board in the breezeway this weekend for more LAMA info!
Don’t forget to join us next Wednesday, December 15 for soups made by our very own Suzanne Johnstonbaugh, Brenda Lund, and Robin Patryas. Hannah Miller from Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS-SW) will be joining us for our theme of Joy.
See you there!
